There are a 3 main factors that determine speed and ability to make a connection using a Dialup modem.
  1. Quality of your phone line
  2. Noise on your phone line will interfere with the quality, speed or even prevent you from making a connection. Lift your hand set and press any number to remove the dial tone. You should hear a clear line free of noise. If you hear cracklling, buzzing or other sounds, then you may have moisture shorting your phone line, other phone equipment introducing noise onto the line or poor connection at a terminal block.

If you can disconnect your house phone wiring from the Bell supplied phone jack (demarcation point), then connect your phone directly to the Bell supplied phone jack and try listening to your phone line again. Lift your hand set and press any number to remove the dial tone.

If your still hear noise on your phone line, it will be an external phone line problem. Please call your telephone repair number and report it while using the Bell supplied phone jack, so they can also hear the noise on the line. If there is no noise on the line, then you need to check your house wiring for poor connections or faulty equipment that may be the causing the noise.

  3. Your modem

  4. The quality of your modem and having the correct drivers for your modem, will affect the speed and stability of your connection.
There are 2 main types of Analog modems that are used for dialup connections: standard modems and win-modems.

    1. A standard modem is available in 2 styles, Internal and External. The standard modem is more robust when dealing with noise, interference and the distance of the phone line from the telephone companys central office. It is hard to find these days and is more money.
    2. A win-modem is not as robust as a standard modem, therefore is not as good at dealing with noise, interference and distance of the phone line to the telephone company's central office. Win-modems are easier to find due to the much lower price then standard modems and is most often part of the package when buying a new computer.

  5. Dialer software settings

  6. Use the default settings of your dialer software, your username and password, plus A or B below.

    1. The telephone number to use if you are local dialing to London Ontario is 660-8655.

    2. If you are an Unlimited Access account or using our Dialup services from outside of the London Ontario local dialing area, contact ISP CANADA for the dial up software or your local dialing number.

    3. If you can not connect check the Multi-link setting. Some Microsoft dialer software has multi-link as the default setting. Please disable it. Multi-link is a feature where you can use more then a single phone line at the same time to increase speed. Each simultanous phone line connection is another monthly connection fee.
